I used exposure compensation to help add light to my subject in a dark room.  The increased exposure made the image look lighter.  The decreased exposure made the images look darker.  To use the exposure compensation, I held down the AV button on the side and moved the dial to set the desired exposure.    Because picture coloring may look different on screen compared to the visual eye, the compensation can help get the desired look you want.
